City’s Debt Rehabilitation Incentive Opens September

To ease the financial burden faced by customers in arrears on their municipal accounts, the town of Ekurhuleni is offering a 50% debt cancellation incentive.

However, this debt repayment incentive is not automatic, as customers will need to apply for relief and eligible customers will receive the incentive from September 1 through March 31, 2023.

Describing the incentive, MMC for Finance, Economic Development and ICT, Fanyana Nkosi, said: “This will include 50% debt cancellation over more than one year from the date of application approval – including rates, service charges, interest and other costs.

“The balance of the account at the date the application is approved, excluding the current account and after the 50% write-off, will be placed in a consolidated arrangement account which will be written off gradually over three years.”

MMC further stated that the arrangement to continue the incentive is dependent on the taxpayer fulfilling the payment arrangements made.

Residents are encouraged to visit their nearest Customer Service Center to apply and learn about incentive requirements or visit the city’s website for more information.
